This spring, several SC’IȺNEW members took part in a 4-day Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) course held in partnership with Fish Safe BC, creating new opportunities for the community and strengthening SC’IȺNEW’s commitment to marine protection.
John Krgovich of Fish Safe BC led the SVOP training, engaging participants in a curriculum developed by Transport Canada. Participants learned all the skills necessary to safely operate small non-commercial vessels such as fishing boats, work boats, and crew boats. The skills covered were extensive, including everything from navigation and emergency management to search and rescue skills and buoyage.
In addition to learning the skills necessary for small commercial vessel operation, participants had the opportunity to complete a radio operator course (ROC-M) and the Small Domestic Vessel course (SDV, formerly known as MED).
After four days packed with learning and hands-on practice, eight SC’IȺNEW members successfully completed the course and accompanying exam, allowing them to become SVOP certified by Transport Canada. Now, these community members can safely operate small commercial vessels in SC’IȺNEW’s waters, even in challenging conditions. Congratulations, captains!

Vessels docked at the Cheanuh Marina
The successful completion of this course by eight SC’IȺNEW members is an important milestone that not only empowers and creates employment opportunities for members but also strengthens SC’IȺNEW’s position as a leader in ocean protection by preparing the community to safely operate vessels, respond to marine emergencies, and prevent marine pollution.
The Marina hopes to offer this course again in the future, giving more community members the chance to sign up. To be the first to know when course dates are released, be sure to sign up for the SC’IȺNEW newsletter.
