Admin & Finance

The Administration and Finance departments support all Band programs and managers to ensure Band operations run smoothly.

The Heartbeat of the Band

Working closely with Band Staff, Managers and Chief & Council, the Admin and Finance departments ensure all areas of band operations apply for, receive, and report on funding for the various programs and initiatives happening here at SC’IȺNEW.

This includes communications with Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) and other funders, as well as and supporting staff with funding applications, approvals, budget creation and maintenance, reporting, filing and much more.

Supporting Staff, Programs and Members:

The Admin & Finance departments work to provide accurate records for every dollar spent, including accounts payable and receivable and to ensure funds including payroll are distributed to all Programs: Social Development, Health, Lands Management, Housing, Youth, Ocean Resources, Maintenance as well as to initiatives like the new facilities currently under construction.

Reception

Staff at the reception desk provides support to all band member and staff by managing correspondence like phone calls and mail, and ensuring News and Events are posted to the notice board and on social media.

Staff monitoring the reception desk typically know where to find the person you’re looking for, or how to get the question you need answered or the support you need.

Finally, the receptionist supports Band Staff by ensuring inventory, supplies and deliveries are managed and all files are kept organized so the office runs smoothly.

Meet The Admin & Finance Team:

Ruth Sauder

Chief Administrative Officer

Ruth Sauder has over two decades of experience working for indigenous communities. She was a young, practicing lawyer when she first moved into working as an administrator for an Indigenous community. She then worked as a manager for a lawyer who specialized in Aboriginal law before she decided to work directly with First Nations communities. She has been with SC’IȺNEW for seven years now and serves as its CAO.

“As SC’IȺNEW’s Chief Administrative Officer, my role encompasses more than just managing poverty, dealing with legacy issues, and funding. I do the funding piece, manage staff and the program funding, and make sure we get through our required audits with our funders so that we can maintain our services to the community. But my job also includes working with leadership to create economic activity in the community, leveraging business opportunities, and creating partnerships. I have to understand contracts in a deep way to ensure we maximize our opportunities. Indigenous communities like ours are small but are the most complex entities in modern Canada, so there are a multitude of challenges in doing this job well.”

Being a good financial manager, Ruth hopes to leave SC’IȺNEW in a much stronger financial position than when she got here and to see the community members benefit by providing education, jobs and opportunities. She is also working on a subdivision plan for the community so members can have homes and infrastructure.

When not working, Ruth plays golf, enjoys some vacation time, goes down to Arizona, reads, socializes, and spends time with family.

Dana Campbell is originally from Ditidaht but joined SC’IȺNEW after her mom married a member of the community. She is currently the financial project manager for SIMMS (SC’IȺNEW Initiative of Marine Monitoring and Stewardship) and is in charge of working on budgets with other managers. She also ensures everything is up to code before bringing it to the CEO for approval.

During her days off work, Dana loves relaxing at home.
